Trains Around the World

You can probably tell by now that I love trains. I have had the opportunity to journey on trains all over the world, from scenic trips through the Swiss Alps and Peru jungle to spending nights on long distance trains in the US, Europe, Africa, Asia and Australia. Later this year my husband I will take a four night train trip across Canada, from Toronto to Vancouver, which will be the longest train journey we have taken to date. Here’s a partial list of the train journeys I have taken:

  • Glacier Express through Switzerland, from Chur to Zermatt
  • Eurostar from Paris to London and London To / from Brussels
  • Day trains in England, Wales, Austria, Germany, France, Denmark, Italy, Sweden, Belgium and Spain
  • Overnight trains from Germany to Sweden, Italy to Luxembourg
  • Journeys throughout Scotland, from Inverness in the north, to Mallaig in the west to Edinburgh / Stirling in the south
  • Tanzara train between Kapiri Mposhi, Zambia and Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, taking two nights (story photo)
  • Indian Pacific train, from Sydney to Adelaide, Australia, taking one night
  • All day train trip from Brisbane to Sydney, Australia
  • All day train trip from Auckland to Wellington, New Zealand
  • TranzAlpine train from Greymouth to Christchurch, New Zealand
  • Round trip from Cuzco to Machu Picchu, Peru
  • All day train trip from Cuzco to Puno, Peru taking about 10 hours
  • Overnight from Bangkok to Chiang Mai, Thailand
  • Overnight from Bangkok to Surat Thani, Thailand
  • Bullet trains though Japan, including Tokyo to Hiroshima
  • Journeys in China, including Beijing to Luoyang, Luoyang to Xian, overnight Xian to Chengdu (17 hours) and Kunming to Guilin (30 hours)
  • Overnight from Mumbai to Agra, India
  • Overnight from Jodhpur to Delhi, India
  • Alaska Railroad from Fairbanks to Whittier, breaking up the journey at Denali National Park
  • Trans USA Amtrak trains from Los Angeles, CA to Glacier National Park, via Portland, then on to Chicago and New York City
  • USA Amtrak California Zephyr from Omaha, Nebraska to Sacramento, California
